Artsy fine-elderly design coffee bistro with food and drinks, coffees, chai, teas, and pastries. Free wifi. Didn’t find the service that great, employees seemed bored and bitter. Not many plugs available for laptops. Service was still good. Wifi good. Plain and not a place I’d go out of my way to go back to. Rating: 2 stars out of 5.

Starbucks Posts First Quarterly Loss in 15 Years

Starbucks just posted a 3Q loss — its first quarterly net loss in more than 15 years.

What’s to blame? Several things:

The company is in the middle of closing about 600 under-performing stores.
The company has also announced plans to cut about 1,000 office jobs (7% of the entire workforce).
U.S. consumers have stopped spending a much on gourmet coffees.
Similarly, UK spending has decreased, and growth in Canada has slowed.
Competition from chains like Dunkin’ Donuts and McDonald’s, which have introduced their own gourmet coffee lines.
Dairy prices have risen.

It’s all (likely) temporary, though.

In the meanwhile, they’re looking to the future: Sorbettos, Vivannos, a new line of of healthy foods (featuring whole grains and lean protein), and a new emphasis on the (recently re-launched) “Starbucks Card.”

Enjoy a cup of coffee or chai while watching the beans get roasted and coffee truly produced. A local Seattle-based coffee company (not new in concept since Seattle is a coffee city) which specializes in small-batch coffee roasting, espresso preparation, and espresso equipment. A quaint little hole in the wall coffee shop with full coffee, tea, and espresso bar, as well as bubble tea. Friendly staff and free wireless. One computer terminal with affordable prices if you’re laptop-less. Rating 4 stars out of 5.

Roasting Coffee in a Barn

When Mark and Lisa Verrochi lost their “three Boston coffee stand leases to large corporate landlords,” they decided to start over — in a small, red, rent-free barn in their back yard.

Out of that barn in Hopkinton, Mass., Red Barn Coffee Roasters was born.

The company soon grew to include 7 locations.

It’s still in the process of expansion, but faces stiff competition:

Red Barn sits in a state flooded with chain coffee stores. Dunkin’ Donuts has 900 stand-alone Massachusetts stores along with 83 combination Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin Robbins outlets, while Starbucks has 151 stores and Honey Dew Donuts has 110 locations.

To help this local business stay afloat, visit one of Red Barn’s Cafes in Westboro, Southboro, Hopkinton, Milford or Boston.

A small hole-in-the-wall coffee shop (little seating room) with organic coffee, tea, and goodies. Very musical and hip with the newest upbeat world music. I enjoyed my visit, though the chai wasn’t the tastiest I’ve had. I’m thinking its a local brand that lacks the edge most of the more international brands have, unless its just watered-down. But enjoyed the environment. I didn’t see any wireless, but I could be wrong. If you’re visiting the Taos plaza, you’ll enjoy dropping by for a cup o’ Joe. For the coffee drinkers, it appears to be a hot spot. 3 1/2 stars out of 5.

An excellent wi-fi coffee shop on the fringes of Capital Hill on Pine. One of the latest night coffee spots in Seattle. Open till 1 am. Great coffee and chai … they use the local spicy favorite chai … Morning Glory Chai. Seating up and downstairs. Good pastries. Good books. Great bulletin board to find out about local happenings. 5 stars out of 5.

Conveniently located on Olive, Coffee Messiah is an artsy grungy coffee dive that will delight your hot beverage palettes. They go with coffee grown in the traditional manner, the traditional way. Global Thinking, Global Friendly. Eco Friendly. The appreciation of community. 5 years old they are a symbol on capital hill countering corporate coffee like the Starbucks one down the street serving as competition. A great meeting space for groups or just a place to sit and enjoy a cup o’ joe. Love the aesthetics, and the service. On my visit recently, though, they did give me a coffee when I ordered a chai. Mistakes happen. 4 stars out of 5.
