Subway and Coffee

1387178[1].jpgThe Subway restaurant chain decided to expand its franchise to include coffee-selling Subway Cafes.  The new cafes are going to appear in the Washington DC area.  In the future, the franchise plans to expand their new concept throughout the nation.  Subway Cafe will include a higher-end variety of sandwiches, pastries and coffee.  It is also rumored that gelato will be available as well.

Subway always tried to reinvent itself throughout the years.  They are better known for the phrase “Eat Fresh” while its competitors are better known for greasy hamburgers and fried food.  Jared Fogle became a celebrity in his own right by losing 245 pounds in one year.  Fogle moved on to become the “Subway Guy” after his popularity (on more than twenty Subway commercials) soared.

Following the rise of popular cafe style restaurants such like Starbucks and Panera Bread, Subway is giving the world of coffee a try as well.  Does this trend sound familiar?  It should.  Mc Donald’s own version of the popular mocha, latte and cappuccino recently arrived in America after thriving in Europe for quite some time.

Subway hopes the introduction of high-end coffee will boost its image as well as clientele.  With Quiznos close at their heels, copying their now famous five-dollar sub, coffee may be what it takes to set an ordinary chain apart from the rest.  So Subway will find yet another reinvention, a coffee reinvention.  If they are as successful as many feel they will be, Subway will remain one the America’s most popular restaurants ~ coffee included.
