McDonald’s Iced Coffee

images[2].jpg

McDonald’s has jumped on the coffee bandwagon with a surprisingly good iced coffee.  The refreshing treat is available in four different varieties (regular, vanilla, hazelnut and caramel) and two sizes (24 oz medium and 32 oz large). At a fraction of the price, McDonald’s iced coffee is comparable to other franchise heavy hitters.  In today’s world of big-business coffee, there was one unexpected variable the competitors didn’t predict.  McDonald’s coffee tastes as good, if not better, than more expensive options on the market.

So, where did Mc Donald’s renewed love affair with coffee begin?  Long gone are the days where the favorite fast food chain was notoriously linked to coffee lawsuits.  From the 80’s into the 90’s the restaurant was better known for over 700 reported coffee burn cases than a terrific brew.  The most renowned case was Stella Liebeck, the woman who sued McDonald’s after her skin and groin were severely burned resulting in skin grafts and a week long hospital stay.  Liebeck received $640,000 in punitive damages plus another undisclosed settlement amount.

With the popularity of coffee on the rise in the United States, McDonald’s decided to spoof up its image and introduce a new premium roast blend in 2006.  Following Burger King’s BK Joe, and Dunkin’ Donut’s popular coffee line, the chain decided to take a swing…and won big.  Through numerous taste tests and research surveys, Mickey D’s Premium Roast proved popular to a wide variety of palates.  Iced coffee, introduced in the summer of 2007, was no exception.  The perfect cool blend of coffee, cream and flavor instantly hooked soon-to-be addicted consumers.  With a savvy ad campaign, reasonable price and great product, McDonald’s iced coffee is at the top of its game.
