Coffee’s Influence on the Environment

Tests are being conducted in Eugene Oregon that may reveal an environmentally friendly side of coffee. The Oregon State Extension service is conducting experiments that appear to show that coffee grounds may play a part in cooking compost so that it can aid crops.

Preliminary tests show that when a quarter of compost was coffee grounds, temperatures were about twenty degrees higher for about two weeks.

Researchers say another environmental benefit is that recycling coffee grounds keeps it out of the waste stream which is beneficial since coffee grounds in landfills create the gas methane.
