Coffee and Diabetics

Coffee is near and dear to many a person. I have evenĀ  heard it referred to as liquid gold by a friend of mine. Most serious coffee drinkers wouldn’t even entertain the thought of drinking decaf. I’ve been told in regard to decaf, “why drink it at all?”.

If you are a diabetic the answer is that you love coffee but studies have shown that the caffeine in coffee increases your blood sugar, your glucose levels. That’s the bad news, the good news is that coffee itself is good for diabetics, without the caffeine it lowers your blood sugar. The solution is easy but not popular. If you have diabetes type 2, you should switch to decaf.

If you are a loyal coffee drinker the first few days of decaf will probably not be pleasant, especially if you rely on a cup in the morning to wake you up. However the benefit to your overall health will be improved.
